Is it Possible to Slow the Aging Process or Reverse it Completely?

Since the days of Ponce de Leon’s search for the Fountain of Youth, humankind has had an unending fascination with looking and feeling younger. Beauty is a $532 billion per year industry helping us maintain a youthful glow. A cream for this and an elixir for that. A nip here and a tuck there. Everyone wants to look and feel like they’re twenty-five again.

Ironically, Ponce looked for his fountain in Florida, America’s favorite place to grow old and die. Today’s version of longevity explorer does his work in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Dr. David Sinclair is a professor of genetics at Harvard Medical School, and he believes that we are on the verge of significant breakthroughs in the science of aging.

The Science of Aging

While many of Dr. Sinclair’s claims are considered on the grandiose side by the scientific community, his research in mice proves to have remarkable results. He and his researchers discovered that compromised blood flow is a significant component of aging.

“Loss of blood flow seems to be one of the early things that lead to diseases of aging,” according to Dr. Sinclair. “As organs like the brain and muscles lose their [blood] perfusion, they no longer function effectively.”

Without getting into the specifics of the supplements and methods he used, Dr. Sinclair found that restoring blood flow can slow or possibly reverse the aging process.

Get Your Blood Flowing

If blood flow is the key to longevity, what can we do to get our juices going?

1. Exercise

There’s not much in this world involving better health that doesn’t require a little exercise. During moderate physical activity, your muscles use the compound Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and produce carbon dioxide (CO2) as a waste product. Your capillaries expand to aid in the release of the CO2 resulting in increased blood flow in your muscles.

It’s not necessary to join CrossFit and hit the gym for two hours a day to achieve the circulatory benefit of exercise. While some resistance or light weight training enhances the effects, a brisk daily 20-30 minute walk does wonders for your blood flow.

2. Intermittent Fasting

Intermittent fasting is a pattern of eating where you switch between periods of fasting on a planned schedule. The most popular forms of intermittent fasting are when you choose to fast for an entire day each week or only eat during a specific 6-8 window daily.

For improved blood flow, fasting is one of the best ways to lower your blood pressure naturally. The physical mechanism for lowering blood pressure by fasting is yet to be determined, but multiple studies illicit a pressure reduction as a result.

3. Supplementation

The list of vitamins and herbal supplements that help improve circulation is a long one. Among the most popular are vitamins E, B, and Iron. Many make a claim when it comes to herbal supplements, but ginger and turmeric prove to be the most potent.

If you’ve ever heard the hype around resveratrol, the age-defying compound found in red wine, that’s from the good Dr. Sinclair. The evidence supporting the claim is marginal at best, but there’s something to be said about supplementing with a glass of red wine occasionally.
